October is National Dental Hygiene Month and We Are Debunking Mouthwash Myths

This October, and every October when we celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month, we always try to remind our patients about the importance of twice daily brushing and flossing as well as share some useful tips about other products and practices that may make their way into your daily oral health routine.

A product that’s gone through an evolution as of late, is mouthwash. You may have noticed many claiming to freshen breath, whiten teeth and protect gums, but there are important facts to know when choosing your mouthwash including whether you should use one at all.

We go through the most frequently asked questions about mouthwash below to hopefully help you make the right choice the next time you are browsing the oral hygiene aisle at your favorite store.

  1. Should I use mouthwash every day?
Always consult with your dentist about how frequently you should use mouthwash. It should be safe to use once or twice each day, but he/or she will consider the state of your enamel and other factors when recommending how often you should use it.
  2. When should I not use mouthwash?
If you have any sorts of sores or cuts in your mouth, stay away from mouthwash until they are properly healed. Also, people with certain health conditions may want to stay away from mouthwash, like those under certain types of cancer treatments.
  3. May I use mouthwash instead of brushing?
In a pinch, mouthwash may temporarily make your breath smell better and your mouth feel cleaner, but nothing replaces brushing twice a day, seeing your dentist twice a year, and flossing.
  4. Can mouthwash whiten my teeth?
Some products claim to whiten teeth and may have an impact on brightening your smile usually only with prolonged use. Ask your dentist for product recommendations.
  5. Will my mouthwash remove stains?
This depends on the mouthwash. If you are concerned with stains on your teeth, ask your dentist if they can recommend a brand that may help with removal.
  6. Will mouthwash keep me from developing gingivitis?
No. Mouthwash can assist the process of reducing your chances of developing gingivitis and cavities, but only along with twice-daily brushing, regular dental exams, and flossing.
