September is Healthy Aging Month and Gum Care Awareness Month!

Gum care and healthy aging go hand-in-hand. Did you know that gum disease, if left untreated, could increase your chances of contracting cardiovascular disease? It’s very important that we care for our gums every day to keep our smiles in good health. After all, a bright, white smile is ageless!

You may be wondering how to care for your gums in addition to your traditional oral health routine of brushing twice per day while paying special attention to your gumline and flossing regularly:

1. Be gentle with the toothbrush, but overly thorough

Brushing your teeth for two minutes per day with soft strokes in a circular motion may seem excessive, but that amount of time is required to get all the debris off your teeth, the spaces in between and your gums. To get your gumline best, angle your brush toward it on the top and bottom to ensure you are reaching hard to reach places.

2. Floss Regularly

Flossing helps eliminate extra bacteria and debris that may take root in your mouth throughout the day. Using a waterpik is also recommended.

3. Use an Antimicrobial Mouthwash

These types of mouthwashes are great for killing bacteria that contribute to gum disease. Talk to your dentist about the best mouthwash for you and don’t forget, the amount of time swooshing is important. Make sure you follow the package directions.

4. Eat Healthy Foods

Eating habits affect all aspects of your help and your gums are no different. Make sure you eat lots of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to get your gums the nutrients they need. What you eat affects your oral health (that just makes sense, right?). A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains provides essential nutrients for gum health. Carbohydrates in moderation are completely fine, but remember, they break down into sugars. If you have a meal with a lot of carbohydrates, make sure to wait an hour for your saliva to do its job and then brush.

5. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water helps flush away food particles and bacteria, reducing the risk of gum disease.

6. Quit Smoking

Smoking restricts blood flow and can make you more susceptible to infections that could be more difficult to control. Quitting smoking will not only improve your gum health, but your overall health.

7. See Your Dentist Twice Per Year

Cleanings, X-Rays, and exams are essential to maintaining healthy gums. Your dental team can spot the early signs of gum disease and get you proper care quickly.

8. Use a Soft Toothbrush

Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to avoid damaging your gums. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if you get sick or the bristles become frayed.
